About Merri Creek Linear Park

Merri Creek Linear Park stretches for approximately 21 kilometers through the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, tracing the Merri Creek from the western suburb of Fawkner to the northern edge of the city around Dights Falls where it meets the Yarra River. The park preserves a swath of open space along the creek, providing a vital habitat for native plants and animals including birds such as the sacred kingfisher and the threatened growling grass frog. Historically, the creek was important to the Wurundjeri people, who lived in the area and maintained connection with the land and water. Since European settlement, the creek corridor faced urbanization and industrial impacts, but extensive conservation and restoration efforts by local councils and community groups have enhanced its ecological health. The park is designed primarily for recreation and community use, featuring shared use trails for walking, cycling, and running, as well as picnic areas, wetlands, and playgrounds. Key landmarks include the Merri Creek Trail, several historical sites such as water mills and former industrial relics, and natural spots like the CERES Community Environment Park which promotes sustainability and environmental education. Visitors enjoy birdwatching, informal sports, fishing in some creek sections, and environmental learning opportunities. The linear layout makes it accessible and ideal for incremental exploration or longer excursions through green spaces within an urban environment.
